Increasing Gun Control

TRT: 1:45

Anchor Lead:

NEW IOWA LAWS ARE RESTRICTING SECONDHAND GUN SALES.  THE LEGISLATION IS A RESPONSE TO THE RECENT INCREASE IN SCHOOL SHOOTINGS AND A START TOWARDS INCREASING GUN CONTROL IN THE U-S. STEVEN BIEBER HAS THE STORY.

VO:

Iowa has strengthened its gun laws with the goal of stopping criminals from obtaining firearms.

Paulsen SOT: What we did is we made it so that you can’t go illegally purchase a gun and then transfer it to someone who is not able to get one themselves.

VO:

This transfer, known as a straw purchase, is considered a class D felony. Local gun store employee Jesse Soper says that more laws will not necessarily equal more safety.

Soper SOT:

The people who are going to break the laws, don’t care what the law says.

Stand up:

This legislation does not affect local gun stores. However, Congress is debating laws that could change the number of bullets allowed in a clip.

VO:

Iowa Republicans and Democrats are split over adding additional gun control laws.

Kressig SOT: I’m a hunter. Love guns. But I don’t know if people need necessarily large round ammunition and those things.

Albrecht SOT: The governor really isn’t beholden to any special interest groups, but he does believe that the laws on the books are, uh, do keep Iowans safe right now.

VO:

Soper thinks that clip or magazine restrictions will not reduce gun violence.

Soper SOT:

You know, you practice for half an hour reloading ten round magazines, it’s not going to slow you down whether you’ve got ten, ten round mags, or one, hundred round mag, all that much.

VO:

State lawmakers are leaving it in the hands of the President and Congress to decide if more restrictions are needed. Steven Bieber, Daily Iowan TV.
